Founded and run by Tom Maher MA (economics and philosophy from Trinity, Dublin). He began his career as an economist. It was while working as an economist that he began to provide A Level economics lessons outside of work. Finding that he preferred teaching more than being an office-bound economist, he then decided to become a full-time teacher of A Level economics at an independent Sixth Form college in central London.

It was while working as a classroom teacher that he saw the critical importance of knowing the specific exam board syllabus rather than just being a subject enthusiast. One of his former A Level economics pupils scored 100 per cent and came top in the UK. This is highly unusual for a subject that is quite essay-based. The pupil in question was very good at the subject but crucially she had perfected her exam technique!

Tom was also one of the early founders and the first president of The Tutors’ Association (in 2014) which is the professional body for tutors in the UK.  During his time as president, he encouraged the tutoring sector to work more closely with schools and help to develop “a sympathetic second voice” in a child’s education.

Our Tutors

Most of the tutors who work with BHT, either teach or have recently taught at independent schools in the London area such as at Westminster School, Eton, St Paul’s Girls’, St Paul’s Boys’, Godolphin & Latymer, Highgate, Mander Portman Woodward and other top performing English schools and colleges.

We are distinct from other tutoring companies in that we are teachers – not just graduates. We place a huge emphasis on knowing the exam board syllabus thoroughly and many of us are also examiners. We are truly well placed to help with exam technique.

Advisers/Consultants

BHT is one of the oldest tutoring companies in England. We were possibly the first tutoring company to feature in the Good Schools’ Guide. We have a wealth of experience that we can draw upon when it comes to advising you about school options or university courses.

Our advisers and consultants have played a leading role at top performing schools in the UK and can provide you with informed advice. We are particularly well suited to helping pupils with their A Level retakes or helping them transition to another school for Sixth Form after they have reached the age of 16 years old.
